Situating amongst thick, dense pine forest, atop a narrow ridge and separated from the towering mountains of the Nanda Devi range by low, medium mountians of the Nanda Devi range by low, medium mountians; at kausani the grandeur of the Himalayan scenery comes alive. the view of the snow-covered Trishul and Nanda Devi is so clear that one gets a feeling of the snows being within touching distance.

Standing 1890 mts. above the sea level, Kausani is nature's own reserve. Even the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi had contemplated on the beauty of the region.

Several snow- capped peaks stand in a stately row, over 300 kms. in length, shining against the azure sky making the horizon as seen from Kausani and enviable spectacle. The glory of the snow crowned Himalayan range reaches its pinnacle when the sunrays turn them into crimson and gold.

Mahatma Gandhi, who spent 12 days in 1929 at Kausani, penned his memorable commentary on the Gita-Ana-Shakti Yoga inspired by the scenic grandeur of this richly gifted spot. The guest house where the Mahatma stayed is now known as the Anashakti Ashram.

Hindi poet laureate Sumitra Nandon Pant was born at Kausani. Some of his early poems composed here have described nature in its myriad manifestations.

Kausani is ideal for those who seek to escape from the din and dust, hustle and bustle of big cities and wish to spend a quiet holiday in the lap of nature.

Indeed, Kausani is a veritable heaven of beauty to which an excursion must be made on visiting Kumaon.

Pinnath

A temple and the village of the same name is 5 km trek from Kausani. It is built on a spur from the Gopalkot peak (2750m) overlooking the upper portion of the Kosi Valley. The temple is situated about half way up the hill above the village. The first is a small conical structure, 2.5 to 3 meters high, dedicated to Bhairon. The main temple is close to this on the north, a squre, slated structure, with the door facing the south, and figures of rajas, etc., sculptured on the walls. The roof of the portico is formed by Indian arch, and on its sides are represented the five Pandvas; the adytum is small and contains nothing but one or two images of Mahadeo and Devi; the original pile was nearly all over thrown by an earthquake in 1920. The Place cab be visited in the rainy season and autumn. The famous fair celebrated every year in October.

Baijnath

Baijnath is just 16 Km. from Kausani and 22 Km from Bageshwar, at a height of 1,125 meters are ancient temples not only of Shiva, Ganesh and Parvati, but also of Chandika, kuber, Surya, Brahma, and Mahisa Sur-Mardini which portrays the slaying of the bull-headed deon by goddess, Kali, Situated on the Gomti's green banks, in the lush calm Garur valley is the main temple of Baijnath dating back to the 13th century A.D.. Rich in history and art and at a short distance of 3kms is Kote-ki-Mai temple, with a life-sieze, superbly sculpted statue of Vishnu presiding over the beautiful old temple, artistically pleasing to both-the soul and eye.

 

Trekking

 

Pindari Glacier
This world famous glacier is a trekker's paradise, as it is easier to visit than most other glaciers. This glacier is situated between the snow capped Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot mountains. The river Pindar originates from this glacier. The glacier is at an altitute of 3353 mts. The entire trekking route is filled to the brim with natural beauty.


Kafni Glacier
It is situated at an altitude of 3853 mts. Many breathtaking views of the mighty Himalayan ranges are visible during the trek.


Sundar Dhunga Glacier
Located at an altitude 3880 mts.; the place is full of natural beauty, with picturesque view of many Himalayan ranges. The entire trek route is a treat for the eyes with beautiful locales strewn all over.
