अल्मोड़ा is a popular hill station situated on a horseshoe-shaped ridge of a mountain, consisting of Talifat in the east and Selifat in the west. It is well-known for its breathtaking views of the Himalayas, rich cultural heritage, handicrafts and cuisine, and serves as a major business hub for the कुमाऊँ region. The town was developed by the Chand dynasty and later expanded by the British regime.

The town of अल्मोड़ा was founded in 1568 by Kalyan Chand, the ruler of the Chand Kingdom, who named it Rajapur. The town was initially owned by Katyuri king Baichaldeo and later donated to a Gujrati Brahmin named Sri Chand Tiwari. The town served as the administrative headquarters of the Kumaun district, which was established in 1815 after the Anglo-Gorkha war and the Treaty of Sugauli. The district originally included the entire कुमाऊँ division, excluding the Terai district, with its headquarters at Kashipur. In 1891, the district was renamed अल्मोड़ा District after its headquarters, and the नैनीताल district was created. Garhwal was separated from the district and became a separate district with its headquarters in Pauri in 1837.

In the 1960s, Bageshwar district, Pithoragarh district, and चम्पावत district were part of अल्मोड़ा district, but Pithoragarh district was separated from अल्मोड़ा on 24 February 1960, and Bageshwar district was separated on 15 September 1997.
